When should a full-retention tank be emptied?
When sludge reaches roughly half the tank, which averages every 3 to 4 years for a household. Smells, slow drainage or backing up into the sanitary ware mean it is already overdue.
What happens to the contents of the tank?
They go to an approved treatment facility. You receive a disposal note: that is the document the authorities ask for at an inspection.
Are emptying and jetting the tank the same thing?
No. Emptying removes the accumulated sludge; jetting also cleans the walls, the filter and the connecting pipework. On an older installation in Alpes-Maritimes, the two often make sense together.
